Digital sovereignty for individuals

Why people should be able to understand, control, move, and delete the data that shapes their digital lives.

Most of us depend on software for work, communication, learning, planning, and reflection. We store photographs, documents, messages, preferences, and increasingly our conversations with AI in services we do not control.

That arrangement is often useful. It is also easy to accept without asking what it costs.

Digital sovereignty for individuals is the idea that people should have meaningful control over their own digital lives. They should be able to understand where their data is, decide who can use it, move it when they choose, and remove it when they no longer want it there.

It is not a call to reject the internet or avoid useful services. It is a call to make control a real option.

A quiet loss of control

Software has made many things easier. A new device can restore years of messages in minutes. A document can be shared with a colleague on the other side of the world. An AI assistant can help organise a difficult question into something manageable.

But convenience can hide a change in ownership. A service may hold the only usable copy of your work. It may decide which file formats are supported, which features remain available, how long it keeps your history, or what happens when you close an account.

For many people, leaving is possible in theory but difficult in practice. Their notes are tied to a proprietary format. Their contacts, photos, and conversations are spread across several products. Their habits are built around a platform that has become harder to replace with every year of use.

This is not always deliberate lock-in. It is often the natural result of software being designed around a provider’s systems instead of a person’s long-term independence. The outcome is the same: changing services becomes expensive, confusing, or risky.

What sovereignty means in practice

Digital sovereignty can sound abstract, but its practical meaning is simple.

People should be able to answer a few basic questions about the tools they use:

  • Where is my data stored?
  • Who can access it?
  • Can I take it somewhere else?
  • Can I use this tool without a constant internet connection?
  • What happens if I delete something or leave the service?

The answers will not always be identical. Some people will prefer a managed cloud service because it is convenient. Others will want everything on their own device. The important thing is that these are choices, rather than facts hidden behind a sign-up screen.

Software can support that choice with local storage, familiar file formats, exports that are actually useful, understandable settings, and deletion that works as expected. These are not glamorous features, but they make a real difference when a person needs to change direction.

Platforms create dependence by default

Large technology platforms provide genuine value. They make powerful tools available to billions of people and solve difficult problems around reliability, collaboration, and distribution.

Their incentives are not always the same as the incentives of the people using them.

Platforms benefit when users remain inside their ecosystem. Accounts make services easier to connect. Stored history can make a product feel more personal. Proprietary workflows can make a competitor feel inconvenient by comparison. None of this needs to be malicious to create dependence.

The problem appears when dependence removes a person’s ability to make an informed decision. If leaving means losing years of work, losing access to friends or customers, or giving up the only usable copy of a personal archive, then the relationship is no longer entirely voluntary.

People should not need technical expertise to retain a basic degree of control over their own information.

AI makes this more personal

AI raises the stakes because people are beginning to use it as a place to think out loud.

A conversation with an AI system may include half-formed ideas, private concerns, personal plans, sensitive documents, or the questions someone is not ready to ask another person. These are not simply search queries. In many cases, they are closer to a journal, a workspace, or a long-running private conversation.

That does not make cloud AI inherently wrong. Cloud services can be useful and capable. But people should know what they are sharing, where it is going, and what alternatives exist.

For some kinds of work, particularly personal reflection and private conversation, a local option matters. An AI model running on a person’s own computer gives them a different default: their conversations stay with them unless they choose otherwise.

Convenience is not the same as control

The choice is not between convenience and sovereignty. Good software should aim for both.

Cloud storage can be convenient. Local files can be portable. Synchronisation can be useful. Offline access can be essential. A service can offer a managed experience without making a person dependent on it forever.

What matters is whether the user has a clear path to understand and change the arrangement. Can they export their work in a useful form? Can they access their data if an internet connection is unavailable? Can they remove it without wondering whether a hidden copy remains? Can they move to another tool without starting their life over?

These questions are not edge cases. They are part of what it means for software to respect the people who rely on it.

A better direction for personal software

Personal software should make people more capable, not more captive.

That means treating privacy, portability, and reversibility as product decisions, not merely legal obligations. It means giving people clear language instead of vague assurances. It means building tools that can continue to be useful even when a company changes its plans.

There will always be trade-offs. Local software may require more setup. Cloud software may be easier to use across devices. Not every product needs to solve every problem in the same way.

But the direction should be clear: people deserve software they can understand, control, and leave.

Digital sovereignty is not about withdrawing from technology. It is about ensuring that technology remains something people use, rather than something that quietly owns a piece of their lives.
